R is for Regardless of Race or Religion... the true meaning and spirt of Christmas touches everyone! Peace on earth please... and GOOD WILL towards each other.
X-mas. I know, I know, I hate using it too but here is what brother webster has to say...
informal Christmas. X, the Greek letter chi, abbr of Khristos, Christ. The character X in Xmas does not represent the letter X in the Roman alphabet but rather the Greek letter chi. The Greek letter chi is (x). Chi is the first letter of the Greek form of Christ which in Greek is (characters not in my font at the moment) which transliterates as Khristos or Christos. The symbol (x) or X has been used as an abbreviation for Christ from the earliest Christian times.
To the last part of this description from brother webster I can attest. In the papal seal and often on religious items including stamped on wafers used in the celebration of the Eucharist you will see a symbol called chi-rho which in the Roman alphabet looks like a P and an X superimposed. Chi and Rho are the first two letters of the Greek spelling of Christ and were used as the abbreviation of that word. When used in flags and seals the open spaces in the X usually contained the characters alpha and omega in smaller size.
Given the byzantine flavour of my eastern Catholic rite, I bow to Rudy's X comment.. I on the other hand will stick with Yule.
and cheap wiki pedia entries.. "Yule is a winter festival associated with the winter solstice celebrated in northern Europe since ancient times. Its Christianized form is called "Christmas", which is essentially the symbology and traditions of Yule with the Christian story of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth superimposed upon it. Yule traditions include decorating a fir tree, burning a Yule log, the hanging of mistletoe and holly, giving gifts, and general celebration and merriment.
