yep, I have eaten it. There is (was?) a franchise in MD (and I am assuming other eastern states) called Boardwalk Fries which were fries in a cup covered with gravy and/or cheese sauce (I know the sauce is cheating)
I grew up in an area of WI that was predominantly settled by German and Irish immigrants so potatoes and cheese - part of every meal I think LOL

Gourmet poutine is on the menu in the fancy schmancy places now... not yer standard cheese curds... add some foie gras. really - and use intense triple glazed beef stock.. and wow! a real taste sensation..
